What is the most important skill a clinical hypnotherapist needs to be successful?

What is the most important skill a clinical hypnotherapist needs to be successful?

Every serious student of hypnotherapy wants to know the answer to the question, “What is the most important skill do I need to master to be successful?”

This question can be answered two different ways.

If the hypnotherapist is looking for success with a specific client then my answer is, “The most important skill you need is the skill of actively listening to your client.”

By listening actively to your client you will not only learn about the problems you client wants fixed, but more importantly you will determine what techniques of hypnotherapy you need to employ to guarantee success.

Listening actively to your client places you in better rapport with your client, therefore obtaining a better hypnotic state of mind than you may achieve with a standard hypnotic induction. Sooner or later in your hypnotherapy session your client will divulge not only what is holding him back from success but the exact steps necessary to guarantee permanent change.

The second answer to, “What is the most important skill a clinical hypnotherapist needs to be successful,” is your need to improve your marketing skill.

Marketing is everything when it comes to the business of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is also called “brief therapy.” People expect to be helped in just a few sessions.

In fact most people surveyed expect to be helped in just one session. The same client may go to a psychologist or family counselor for several months or years, but he/she expects permanent change from a hypnotherapist in just one session.

If you as a hypnotherapist are able to help your clients in just one or two sessions, that means you must have 25 or 30 new clients every week in order to earn a good income.

Newspaper advertising and telephone book listings generally do not bring in enough business to survive. You must become an excellent marketer in order to have a successful practice.

If you are a stage hypnotist rather than a hypnotherapist, you must learn to achieve superior marketing skills because very few agents keep stage hypnotists busy. Agents usually specialize in musical acts and feel comfortable working a specific geography. Stage hypnotist need to travel outside their region in order to keep busy every week and every year. Improving your marketing skills enables you to keep a solid book of business.

Summary:

Learning a hypnotic induction is just one skill set you need to master to become successful at hypnotizing. Mastering the skill of “listening” will enable you to diagnose and treat your hypnotherapy clients successfully.

A second skill you need to master to become successful in hypnotherapy and stage hypnotism is the skill of marketing.
