Hypnosis and Olympic Achievement

Over the centuries hypnosis has been used to help Olympians reach their potential by overcoming hardships and personal limitations. One significant world record was broken back in the 1950’s based on the hypnosis principle of changing one’s perception or in other words, changing ones “thinking.”

Roger Bannister was the first man in recorded history to break the 4 minute mile.

He began by changing his thinking about the four minute barrier.

He thought in terms of seconds instead of minutes. He used 240 seconds in four minutes and then shot for 239 seconds. Surely it was easier to focus on shaving off one second rather than focusing on beating a four minute barrier.

On May 6, 1954, the record was broken. Bannister, clocked in at 3minutes 59 seconds or 239 seconds by Bannister’s count.

Only forty six days later, John Landy of Australia broke Bannister’s new record by registering 3 minutes 57 seconds.

Once he changed his perception of the four minute barriers, he broke the world record. Soon after, other sprinters broke the barrier as well since no longer would the four minute mile be a barrier to human achievement.

Hypnosis involves changing perception.

When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.
