Hypnosis FAQs by Wayne F. Perkins

When I became a hypnotist back in 1975, I learned there were many misconceptions about hypnosis. Here are some of the questions I faced back in 1975. It is strange but the same questions regarding hypnosis in 1975 are the same questions hypnotists face in 2005.

FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Hypnotism)
Frequently Asked Questions of Wayne F. Perkins
Educational Hypnotist
Question#1.

Does hypnotism only take place when a hypnotist gives suggestions to a subject or hypnotee?

Answer#1.

All hypnotism is self-hypnotism and can be executed alone by the subject or hypnotee.

Question#2.

Can subjects who have been tested for susceptibility to hypnosis and passed the testing, benefit from the hypnotic condition?

Answer#2.

Everyone can benefit from the hypnotic condition. No tests are ever needed.

Question#3.

Is stress better treated by drugs prescribed by a doctor?

Answer#3.

Stress is better-controlled long term by teaching the subject how to use relaxation exercises before, during and after stressful situations. However, prescribed drugs can be use in conjunction with the exercises.

Question#4.

Can a person be hypnotized to permanently lose weight?

Answer#4.

Working with the root cause connected to the symptom of overeating will assist the subject in long-term weight control. Learning how to eat the right foods, coupled with exercise and proper relaxation, are also important factors for success in any weight loss program.

Question#5.

Must a person or subject lose control to the hypnotist to achieve success?

Answer#5.

A person or subject learns from the hypnotist how to access the subconscious and
apply psychological techniques to achieve success. Hypnosis is a cooperative learning process.

Question#6.

Is suffering from pain required in life?

Answer#6.

Pain is always an alarm or signal that something is wrong. You can turn off the alarm using hypnosis or other boday awareness techniques.

Question#7.

Can a person be hypnotized against his or her will?

Answer#7.

We currently have dangerous hypnotic "scripts" running in our brain every day that change our will. Using a hypnotist, you always know he/she is a hypnotist, so you make a conscious choice to become affected by suggestion. This is not the case when watching TV or a violent crime and then trying to execute this behavior on your own.

Question#8.

Do you need to have a quiet room and conditions to achieve the hypnotic state?

Answer#8.

The hypnotic condition or "concentration" can be achieved anywhere. Many professional athletes hypnotize themselves during strenuous and loud competitive events.

Question#9.

Is hypnotism is a "trance" state of mind?

Answer#9.

Hypnotism is an active, focused state of mind. A person may exhibit a "trance" like condition but only to eliminate districtions and focus on the problem at hand.

Question#10.

Does a hypnotist issue commands to achieve results?

Answer#10.

A hypnotist presents ideas that can be accepted or rejected by the subject or hypnotee to achieve results.

Question#11.

Is hypnotism is a religion?

Answer#11.

Hypnotism is just one of many words that translate into "focused concentration." There is no religious significance to hypnotism.

Question#12.

Must a subject or hypnotee achieve total muscle relaxation to become hypnotized?

Answer#12.

A person may achieve total muscle relaxation or be in a highly active physical state while concentrating in the hypnotic state of mind. A professional athelete may use hypnosis while in the performance of his/her physical skill.

Question#13.

Are executives are too busy to use self-hypnosis?

Answer#13.

The busier you are in your life, the more you are already using self-hypnosis fo solve your problems.

Question#14.

Should a hypnotic subject only work on one problem or challenge at a time?

Answer#14.

Problems and challenges are interrelated. You may work on many goals at the same time.

Question#15.

Does an individual require several reinforcement sessions by a trained hypnotherapist in order to achieve success?

Answer#15.

An individual may reinforce hypnosis by repetition of the "prevailing thought" or "prevailing idea"with no hypnotherapist present.

Your One Minute Mental Vacation

How would you like to take a one-minute vacation? Do you think it can help you cope with your challenges each day? Let's see how hypnosis and relaxation can help.

Click here to listen and relax to the hypnotic induction. Turn up your speakers and relax!

The purpose of this section is for you to learn how to relax in just a few moments.
When you use several of these moments during a typical work or school day, you will find very wonderful results.

Just as it takes many repetitions of angry moments or stressful periods of time during the day to build up stress.
It will take many repetitions of calm and peaceful periods of time to build a perfect "mental vacation."

To begin this vacation you may want to print these directions out and then either read them aloud to yourself or read them into a recording device.
When you read them to yourself or into a device, picture yourself relaxing very deeply while you give yourself these suggestions. Pause at the end of each paragraph.

Pause from 20 to 30 seconds at first. After you are finding yourself relaxing very deeply, you may want to change your pause to just three or four seconds.

Are you ready? Lets see how much we can really relax using this technique.

My Vacation Begins!

I will begin the relaxation process by focusing in my mind on a place where I always have total peace..... It may be resting beside a stream or a lake.

It may be watching the waves on the ocean. It may be a scene high up in the mountains. Or it may be in the comfort of my own bed. Whatever I place in my mind I use for my vacation. The image I find will be the correct one.

As I think about this scene. My body is relaxing, deeply relaxing. All of my muscles are going loose, and limp, and perfectly relaxed. Each and every deep breath that I take is relaxing me deeply. Nothing will disturb me during my vacation. If an emergency happens, I know I can respond very quickly.

My mind is keenly alert and aware, while my body relaxes, perfectly.....I am taking a very deep breath now. .As I inhale I notice how my chest expands to take in each cleansing breath.
As I exhale, I notice how all of the tension leaves my lungs.
I feel good, I feel fine, I feel perfectly and completely, relaxed. Nothing will disturb me.
Each and every breath that I take is assisting me in relaxing deeply, soundly and perfectly.

I am thinking about a place that is very relaxing. As I firmly picture that place in my mind, my body relaxes perfectly. All of my cares are just drifting away.
I may feel myself relaxing in this very calm and peaceful place. I feel and see and hear and smell this scene of deep, relaxation.

All of my cares are drifting away. I know I can always bring them back when I want to, but I prefer to let them drift away. As my cares are drifting away.. My body relaxes deeply, soundly and perfectly.

When I go to bed tonight, I will sleep soundly as well. I will let all the tension of the day drift off into space. (Long pause)

Now I am ready to emerge from this wonderful state of mind.
Whatever was bothering me before this session will cease to bother me at all.
Whenever I use this exercise, I will find myself relaxing very quickly and very deeply.
At the count of three, I will emerge from this condition. One..... Two.....Three..... I am wide awake..... alert..... and feeling good in every way!

How are you feeling? I hope you are feeling great. This exercise may take you three to five minutes initially. Read this script into a tape recorder or other recording device. Use it any time you desire. The best time to beat stress is before it has a chance to take hold. Use this exercise before entering those stressful periods of the day. This will make it harder for stress to take hold. Then, use it while going through periods of stress. Finally, use it just after a stressful period. Once you practice this exercise, you will be able to relax in just about a minute.

Five or ten strategically placed "mental vacations," will vastly improve your life.

Last Minute Help for Taking Tests in School

Hello again,

This last week, even though it has been over 110 degrees in Phoenix, I have had dozens of inquiries from students asking how they can learn quicker and get better grades in school.

We now have many 12 month school programs as well as many students are in summer school in colleges and universities in Arizona and California.

Here are some quick tips that will help you get better test scores!

Are you ready to take your final examinations? Do you feel confident you will pass your tests?

Here are five great tips that will help you achieve higher test scores and reduce the stress associated with taking your tests at the same time. As a hypnotherapist, I have worked with thousands of students in, junior high school, high school, and college. I find these tips help all students overcome anxiety caused by test taking, and improve memory and recall. The results are better examination scores.

1. Get a good night sleep before the test. Do not stay up all night. Your brain works so much better after a good night's sleep. You will carry a relaxed feeling into the testing classroom or lecture hall.

2. Breathe deeply. When you find yourself in the classroom, begin breathing deeply and deliberately. Think to yourself, the test will be easy, and you feel confident in the grade you will attain after taking the test.

When the teacher passes out your test and it is in your hand, take three slow deep breaths. Each time you inhale; feel energy entering your body. Feel the energy stimulate your brain. Each time you exhale, picture, and feel all of the tension leaving your lungs.

3. Skip the difficult questions. As you begin taking the test, answer all the questions, you are confident in, first. Each time you pass over a hard question, take slow deep breaths again, allowing your body to relax and your brain to focus on the easy questions.

You will find you will soon have an urge to go back to the difficult question, answering it. Go ahead and do so at this time.

4. Remember, you are smarter than you think. In spite of what your parents said or what your teachers think, you are much smarter than you think. As you relax your body and focus your brain, you will begin to feel more in control of your test results. Everything you have ever read, heard, touched, tasted or smelled is always stored in your brain. As you relax, you will find it easier to remember information.

5. Never, cheat on a test. By cheating on a test, not only do you stand a chance of expulsion from school, but also you are sending a message to your brain that you are not smart enough to take a test on your own. What happens next is you lose self-confidence, for not only the test you are taking currently, but also all tests and all subjects. The loss in self-confidence is much more damaging and will follow you around longer than expulsion from school.

The lack of self-confidence will affect personal relationships, jobs, and earning power over a lifetime. Relax and trust yourself to remember the information you need without cheating on tests.

Summary:

Remember to relax when taking tests. Relaxation triggers the brain to remember information easier and recall it when taking tests. Practice the five steps and watch your test scores rise.
